Press Release: Leaving Certificate Helpline Opening Day

7th September 2020

Press Release: Leaving Certificate Helpline 2020, Opening Day

1800-265-165

The National Parents Council Post Primary Leaving Cert Helpline 1800 265 165 launched at 11am on Monday 7th September and will run to Wednesday 16th September. The Helpline aims to support students, parents and guardians through the provision of accurate information, support and advice during this time.

Approximately 60,000 students received Calculated Grades on 7th September 2020, in a move away from the traditional leaving certificate examination results. In its opening day, 255 callers, including students, parents, guardians and others, contacted the Helpline. The majority of queries focussed on the results received today, with many callers seeking information regarding the appeals process for the calculated grading system.

The Minister for Education, Ms Norma Foley, TD, said “I am very pleased to hear that so many students and parents are availing of the Helpline. Naturally as today was the first day, the LC Helpline was very busy and received a very large volume of calls. I would like to thank callers for their patience and the Guidance Counsellors who are providing an exceptionally good service at this time. Students are also reminded that Guidance Counsellors in their schools are available this week to support them and they should contact their school to make an appointment. Finally, I would like once more to congratulate the students who received their Leaving Cert results today, it was a great achievement. I wish them well in their next step in their careers whether going on to Further or Higher Education, training or apprenticeship or the world of work.”

Beatrice Dooley, President of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, provided the following advice “We would advise students to contact their school-based guidance counsellor with Leaving Certificate related queries in the first instance. If the Helpline lines are engaged when they call give it an hour and try again, remember we will answer your calls until Wednesday week. Whether you contact us in school or at the Helpline at 1800 265 165 we are only a phone call away.”
