Your Guide to the Leaving Certificate

All you need to know about the Leaving Certificate

A. When they are given their Leaving Cert results your son or daughter will receive an application form for viewing of scripts as well. There is also an online appeals facility if the young person is not available to attend the school in person. The form must be printed off, completed and returned to the school in time for the deadline.

A. The Viewing of Scripts service allows candidates to see their script and if they wish to make copies of their scripts during the viewing sessions using their own digital device. Students must view the scripts themselves and they are permitted to take one other person with them to the viewing.

A student may make an application to view their exam scripts from 9am Wednesday 14th August until 5pm Friday 16th August. This application must be done online through the candidate self-service portal.

The SEC warns that: “To accommodate this earlier issuing of Leaving Certificate appeals, the deadlines for applying to view scripts and for appealing results are immutable.  Under no circumstances will late applications be accepted”.

A. It costs nothing to view scripts.

A. Papers can be viewed at the school and the student will be assigned a time and date during which they may view the papers:

Session 1: Tuesday 20th August from 5pm – 8pm

Session 2: Wednesday 21st  August from 9am – 12noon

Session 3: Wednesday 21st August from 2pm – 5pm

If you do not receive an email confirming a viewing appointment before the viewing sessions commence, you should contact the Organising Superintendent in the school where you sat your written examinations. Young people often invite a teacher, a parent or older sibling along to view their scripts.

For those subjects which were marked online these will be available online during the same time as the viewing in the school (below). In 2019 the exams corrected online are:

Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Politics & Society and LCVP ‐Link Modules (Written paper).

A. The first thing to look for is a simple totting error on the results sheet. This can be appealed with form APL and means that a grade can be corrected without reassessment of the paper or the marking scheme. However SEC (State Examination Commission) advises the candidate to lodge a formal appeal on the paper also to cover all options. The formal appeal will look at the calculation of marks within questions, disallowed questions and dispute regarding full marking of a question.

A. It is advisable to bring someone with you. Also make sure that you are aware of the marking scheme. These are available either from the review center in the school or online from examinations.ie

A. After Viewing a Script, if you have found an error, you need to complete a “Candidate Observation Form AP1” for each subject whether you have viewed it online or in the school.

Decision needs to be made then as to whether you want your script reviewed or not.

A. There is a fee to recheck/appeal an exam script. This however will be refunded if the paper is upgraded.

You must make an application to appeal/recheck the script online through the candidate self-service portal. The applications open on Friday 16th August at 5pm and close on Thursday 22nd August at 5pm.

The results of the appeal will be sent electronically during the week ending 20th September
