PRESS RELEASE 22-11-2009 NPCpp do not support Teachers’ Strike.
The National Parents’ Council Post-primary do not support the upcoming teachers strike on 24/11/2009.
• Parents nationally want the integrity of the school year upheld and the pupil/teacher contact hours maintained. • At present NPCpp are disenchanted by what is happening within the education sector. This year parent/teacher meetings have been held during school time. • The allocation of Special Needs Assistants in schools is falling and further threatened. • Students will not get the support that they require as the pupil teacher ratio has increased. • Other students are working in an environment where students taking ordinary level and higher level papers work in the same class side by side. • School development planning is restricted as there is a ban on any work out of school hours. • School transport costs have risen dramatically in the last twelve months. There is a suggestion of further hikes to this. • Third level registration fees have increased to €1500 and likely to increase further. Yet our young people are being deprived of some of the essential services necessary to boost their morale and occupy their recreation time. • Young people have been forced to leave college as grants have not come through to support education and accommodation.
These are some of the issues affecting our students. Why should frustrated, angry parents support an initiative that lessens the support required by our children?
